14 . Halo 4 (2012)

By 2011, the Xbox 360 seemed to have arrived at the end of her life cycle - and its skills were effectively exhausted. So it was great to see the Halo 4-release and pack technology of 343 industries such as global lighting and image-based lighting with a resolution of 720p. The animation work was also incredible thanks to extensive motion detection, and although some of the character conversions were unconventional, Halo 4 was a milestone in the graphic at the beginning of a new console generation.

13 . DriveClub (2014)

Do not make a mistake - DriveClub had a whole series of problems at the start (Evolution Studios would compensate for almost two years post-launch content). And sure, even in the graphics department, it ran with only 30 pictures per second. But the love of detail of the cars, each consisting of about 260,000 polygons, and the presentation with their mixture of lighting, real-time reflections and atmosphere were simply incredible. It also ran with a resolution of 1080p, which looked all the lush to PS4.

12 . The last of us (2013)

Similar to Halo 4, The Last of Us came close to the threshold of the next console generation, originally launched for PS3 in 2013. However, the detailed accuracy for the characters Joel and Ellie has hardly improved realistic animations on detailed skin structures are still amazing today. Combine this with the incredible use of shadows, light, post-processing effects and beautiful environments, and you have an instant classic. Only bursts of the frame rate during certain scenes (which have been fixed in PS4-Remaster) impaired the total experience.

11 . Grand Theft Auto 5 (2011)

Although it fades 2 compared to Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstars Grand Theft Auto 5 is still very impressive. Los Santos has incredibly well broken his LA inspiration with some 1: 1 resorts. There was also the incredible strain removal, texture streaming, animation and lighting - all this ran on platforms of the previous generation. It is noteworthy that Rockstar has done all this and offered a separate online mode as its own, complete experience.

10 . Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Herz (2015)

Kojima Productions with director Hideo Kojima at the top always had a preference for kinematography and presentation. However, the new Fox Engine brought things to the next stage. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain was also characterized by material-based illumination, skin shading, animation quality and drawing removal. Most of the most impressive, how the game runs over generations with 60 frames per second, though current consoles and PCs offer the most definitive versions.

9 . The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

It's amazing how the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt came to the start, as it was downgraded by previous shows. The functions of REDEngine 3 ranged from Tesselation in the surroundings and volumetrics to HDR rendering to improved animations. Even more cooler is how certain effects such as light waves with bloom and chromatic aberration were included in the Xbox ONE and PS4 versions (though they run with 30 frames per second). It also did not hurt the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Such incredible production values in his narrative and quest design.

8th. Doom (2016)

Doom is a venerable attack on their senses with his particles, atmospheric light, motion blur and excellent image quality. Only very few shooters combine so sent neighborly fast, cruel action with such a buttery power (even if the console versions sometimes suffer from frame-drop). Even if they are not a graphic connoisseur, it is hard not to be impressed how error-free Doom is executed.

7 . Battlefield 5 (2018)

In all the criticism that the Frostbite Engine has earned over the years, the graphic accuracy that provides you in Battlefield 5 is undeniable. The environmental destruction is incredible and effects such as snow and particles collect realistic on destroyed structures (if the snow does not dynamically slip around the feet). Skin shaders and textures look realistic, while volume and alpha effects are sometimes breathtaking. Battlefield 5 has not least proven how beautiful warfare can be.

6 . God of war (2018)

Sony Santa Monica has exceeded the expectations with the new God of was revised and the presentation of the series revised in a unique way (eg single shots for whole scenes). Also graphically there is much to love, thanks to the physically based lighting system, which interacts with different objects and environments and creates vibrant landscapes and pitfalls with equal self-confidence. This does not include the strong image quality, excellent effects such as rain and snow as well as the phenomenal textures and details of the characters.

5 . Gang 5 (2019)

For the Gears of War franchise, there has never been a problem to look good. Gears 5, however, decided for a broader visual range and presented large open landscapes with snow deformation and sand particles. The whole thing combines with excellent lighting, excellent texture and high-quality character models as well as detailed animations. And that was just on the Xbox One - the PC version looks even better.

4 . Horizon Zero Dawn (2017)

If games like Horizon Zero Dawn have proven something, a visually excellent game with 30 frames per second is possible. The soft body physics ensures in addition to high-resolution textures, environmental connections and reflections in the screen area for reacting details such as foliage and hair realistic on aspects like the wind. Character models are very detailed and can comprise up to 550,000 polygons for some machines, which is crazy in view of the size of the game. All in all, Horizon Zero Dawn is a great undertaking, while the performance remains solidly solid.

3 . Metro Exodus (2019)

4A Games is one of the most underestimated studios in the market, but the edition with the metro series has found overwhelming recognition. This is especially true for the graphic, whereby the latest Metro Exodus is an outstanding example. The world is more open than in earlier games, but nuanced effects such as dirt, snow and dusty rays are still incredibly detailed. The lighting system is particularly breathtaking thanks to global lighting and coloring, all of which are done in real time. Despite performance problems with consoles at startup, Metro Exodus is still a great performance.

2 . Uncharted 4: The end of a thief (2016)

According to The Last of Us, we asked how Naughty Dog could put the bar even higher. As it turned out, the answer was easy. Uncharted 4: The end of a thief has everything. Its simulated physics is crazy; Character models are detailed and immaculate animated; Physically based rendering, image quality, global lighting, water simulation etc. are on the agenda. The list goes on. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End is one of the standards for next-generation visuals.

1. Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)

We knew that Rockstars Red Dead Redemption 2 would be special on the first screens. What we did not know was how big the graphic jump would be opposite the previous games of the developer. Thanks to the focus on current consoles, physically based rendering is implemented for materials and gives it a natural feeling. The lighting looks phenomenally, be it in intermediate sequences or at dusk in the open world. And while much about the excellent animation, which can be said almost flawless character models and the use of volumes, it is attention to smaller details that the experience really brings together. With regard to the best-looking games, there is nothing better.
